About me

I'm a professional adventure athlete, with a solid background in mountaineering, transalpine tramping, rock climbing, ski touring, skydiving, hang gliding, paragliding, microlighting, whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking, mountain biking, windsurfing, and coastal and offshore sailing. I'm widely known in mountain sports and aviation circles.

When I'm not playing, I am a writer, photographer, website host, public speaker, and outdoors instructor. Through my contacts, media and social outreach, I have strong opportunities to strengthen brands. I'm the author of "What If You Fly?", a photo-essay on the value of outdoor pursuits in New Zealand.

My website, Simple Adventures

I'm also the owner/operator of Aero Dynamics NZ, a free flight equipment manufacturing company, and have managed, operated and instructed at various outdoor pursuits centres in New Zealand.

This is a new feature, formed primarily with the goal of encouraging more people into New Zealand's outdoors. It is my intention to make this interactive, with public posting their ideas, trips and questions.

Public speaking

I feel that the value I have as a public speaker does not come from any accomplishments I may have achieved in the outdoors, but from what I've gleaned along the way. I don't believe that those who have attained lofty achievements in outdoor pursuits are particularly different from the rest of humanity. I don't particularly believe in talent. I do believe in attitude, and that attitude is vastly more important than aptitude. Just as everyone experiences fear, doubts and failures, we are all capable of finding great rewards in whatever we choose to apply ourselves to.

“I really appreciated his input and presentation in trying to inspire complete strangers to do better in life. I think you should invite him more often if possible. He is such an asset for Work and Income. In my opinion, what makes him so appealing (beyond the fact that he has wonderful public speaking skills and was dating a celebrity) is that he is not someone who works for Work and Income and therefore can speak on the same level to the job seekers”
